Junior Grand Prix

28th October 2010

Sorry for the delay in reporting on the last junior grand prix: I think I’m still recovering from the battering that my handicapping skills were given by the Morley family for the second month running!

This time it was younger brother, 11-year-old Matthew, running his very first grand prix, who decimated the field. Matthew finished over 1¼ minutes in front of the next runner, Lewis Price, who himself returned the 3rd fastest time of the evening.

Close on their heels was 13-year-old Sarah Price. Sarah has only recently taken up running but fitness from her other main sport of swimming was apparent when she not only ran a time almost half a minute faster than last month, but also was the fastest girl on the evening. Obviously a talent to watch for the future!

Fastest runner on the night was another newcomer to the Poly ranks, 16-year-old Adam Mann, from Churchill Community College in Wallsend. Also from this school was the second fastest girl, 15-year-old Alex Haigh, who was only a second behind Sarah’s time.

Other than the winner, the handicapping worked really well, with only seconds separating the rest of the field, making for a very exciting finish. Leading the grand prix after the first two races are Sarah Pearce and 9-year-old Lucas Sutherland, both on 16 points, with 12-year-old Ciaran Douglas only 2 points behind on 18. This promises to be an interesting grand prix!
